The sun may still be shining, but the temperatures at night are certainly a lot colder than what we’ve been used to over the summer months. Autumn is now upon us and although we still want to enjoy our gardens, the nights are drawing in and you can’t ignore the chill in the air.
One of the easiest ways to transform your garden in the autumn is with outdoor lighting and heating. It does not matter whether you have a small patio area or a large garden, as outdoor lighting can give your garden a whole new lease of life to enjoy and spend time in. Even if it’s just a small space you would like to highlight, outdoor lighting is the way to go.
If you would like to still spend time in your garden this autumn once the sun has gone down, here are a few tips and ideas to get you started.
Where do you want your lights to go?
Depending on where you want to highlight your garden, will depend on how many lights you will need. Don’t over do it with too many lights, as you want the ambiance to be fitting within the area and not too bright.
Walk around your garden in the daytime and work out with areas you would like to highlight and which areas you would be happy to keep in the dark. Right this down so you can make sure your chosen lights are placed just as you wish.
When choosing your outside lights for the garden, make sure they are weatherproof and made for outside use. You want to make sure they are safe and don’t cause a risk to anyone. They will specify on the label or box if they are suitable for outside use. If you are unsure, ask the retailer or speak to a qualified electrician.
Ground Spike Lights
Ground spike lights are great as they are extremely flexible, as they can be moved around as often as you wish, as long as you have enough wiring. You may decide different seasons require different lighting in your garden. If this is the case, then ground spike lights are a good choice.
Ground spike lights also have low energy consumption, which makes them a good overall option for lighting your garden.
Pathway Lights
If you have pathways or edges in your garden that you would like to highlight, then pathway lights are a good choice for you. If people are walking down your paths at night or in the early evening, it is also a safe way to show people where they are stepping to prevent trips or falls.
Pathway lights are also good for highlighting any plants or shrubbery. Avoid over lighting these areas though with too many lights positioned too close to each other.
Decking Lights
If you have decking areas, then decking lights can look seamless and will provide the light required to illuminate your space effectively. Make sure the stairs to your decking are adequately lit, but then reduce this where you relax to make sure the ambiance is fitting with the situation.
Wall Lights
Wall lights will do well to light up your garden area and can fit in well with the overall décor of your house, if chosen appropriately. There’s a wide range of modern wall lights, through to a more vintage look, depending on the look you would like to achieve.
Wall lights are great for illuminating important parts of your garden, such as the back porch and patio area, but can also be used to highlight areas such as cooking spots, fences, and outside seating areas.
