Make Electrical Safety Your New Year’s Resolution

It’s that time of year again when we reflect on the year and make New Year’s resolutions for the year ahead. How many of you have vowed to go to the gym at least 3 times a week, give up alcohol for the month of January, or to eat no junk food?

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions and by the second week of January we have often already failed. If this sounds like you and you really are not sure what promises you should make yourself for 2018, then how about making it electrical safety? It could end up saving your life!

Here’s a list of 5 electrical safety New Year’s resolutions to follow in 2018.

  1. Check Your Smoke Alarms Once a Month

Checking your smoke alarms really is one of the easiest things to do, but it could be the most important thing you can do, as it could potentially save your life if there was a house fire. It only takes a minute to do by pressing the button and listening to the beep. It’s simple, so add it to your monthly routine.

  1. Stop Overloading Plug Sockets and Plug Adapters

We are all guilty of it, when you are struggling for plug sockets it’s very easy to over load them and add plug adapters. However, it is not safe to overload them, doing this could potentially cause a house fire. As a general rule, only use one extension lead per socket and never plug in an extension lead into another one.

If you are stuck for plug sockets, speak to your local electrician to install additional sockets. It’s a pretty quick and easy process, and not one that will cost you the earth to do.

  1. Don’t Make Changes to Your Electrics Yourself

It doesn’t matter how easy you think an electrical job is to do, it is always better and safer to leave it to a qualified electrician. DIY electrical jobs every year costs lots of money to rectify each year and some are potentially life-threatening mistakes too.

  1. Check Appliances for Wear and Tear

Make it your New Year’s resolution to check over all of your appliances in the home. Check they are still in full working order, with no faults. Also check the leads and plugs, ensuring none of them are worn, frayed or have damaged cords or internal wires visible. If any are faulty or damaged, replace immediately.

  1. Register all of Your Electrical Appliances

How many electrical appliances in your home have you actually registered? If there is a dangerous fault with one of your appliances and the manufacturer was trying to recall them, being registered is one way for them to be able to contact you. Registering your items really is simple and quick to do. It doesn’t cost anything initially when you purchase a new appliance and it’s so worth it in the long term.

The start of the New Year is the perfect time to check your electrical safety in the home. If you have any queries or concerns, please contact us and we will be happy to advise.
